Located just two blocks up from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and famed Cannery Row, sits a local and visitor favorite. Family owned and operated for over thirty years, Vivolo’s Chowder house has served delicious seafood, pasta and the best New England style clam chowder in Monterey. I used to live in Boston, Massachusetts for over seven years and I can honestly say that this is the best clam chowder that I have had outside of Boston. The chowder is clam heavy and does not use fillers such as potatoes or bacon to artificially enhance the flavor.
Part of the reason that the clam chowder is so tasty is that co-owner and chef Mark Davis hails from Boston and brought his family recipe with him forty years ago when he moved from the east coast to Monterey. My last visit to Vivolo’s, I sampled their yummy clam chowder, delectable linguini with calamari and clams and the most savory cheesecake.
As Vivolo’s is a popular restaurant, they do have the option to add your name to a waitlist from their website. Recently, Vivolo’s had an outdoor patio installed outside the restaurant. For cooler nights, the patio has heat lamps. It is a dog friendly establishment. The patio and interior are often filled with locals and tourists.
Check the video below to see an interview with Tarin from Vivolo’s, a close up with their food and how to get to the restaurant. The next time you are in the Monterey area, make sure to stop in at Vivolo’s Chowder house located at 127 Central Avenue in Pacific Grove.
